Towards the end of Homer Spit, the Fishing Hole on the Spit is a classic stop for fishing enthusiasts.  There aren't many places that offer good fishing in the center of a city, but the Fishing Hole in Homer is just such a place.  Often crowded in peak fishing months, this location is touristy but is also full of fish.  The Fishing Hole is generously stocked by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game with silver and king salmon smolt.  Each year when the fish return to the Hole, anglers have the opportunity to catch a sizeable salmon from this well known spot.

Halibut Fishing In Homer Alaska AT The Jackpot Halibut Derby

Started in 1986, the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby is one of the longest running derbies in Alaska and boasts the largest prizes.  The derby runs from May into September, so virtually any angler who goes halibut fishing in Homer during the summer has the opportunity to be a derby winner.  A $10 ticket buys the chance to win a myriad of prizes from random drawings to awards for the biggest fish.  The grand first prize goes to the largest halibut caught and ranges from about $30,000 to $45,000.  Recent winners have tipped the scales with halibut over 300 pounds.

For fishing and other outdoor activities, the weather in Homer is mild and comfortable compared to other alaska fishing locations.  Precipitation in Homer is much less than other coastal areas with only about 25 inches of rain annually.  Temperatures in summer generally fall between the upper 40's and the high 50's.  Winter temperatures generally have highs in the teens and lows in the mid 30's.

Visiting Homer

Travelers can easily reach Homer by car, by plane or by ferry.  The Seward Highway connects Homer with Anchorage and is a scenic 225 mile drive by car.  The Alaska Marine Highway System ferry that travels to Seldova stops in Homer.  Several companies offer daily air service from Anchorage to Homer.
